PEMRA imposed Fine of Rs.1 Million on Geo News

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has imposed fine of Rs.1 Million on Geo News on airing seditious and scandalous Shahzaib Khanzada talk show against retired justice Javed Iqbal- the chairman NAB (National Accountability of Bureau) and maligning the state institutions.

PEMRA imposed 1 Million Fine on Geo News

PEMRA issued notification signed by Mr. Muhammad Tahir General Manager of Operations-Broadcast Media on yesterday 6th August 2019 after recommendation of personal hearing committee during which Geo News in its arguments and reply failed to defend the stance taken by PEMRA. According to PEMRA in Geo News Program “Aaj Shahzaib Khanzada Kay Sath” the anchor person Mr. Shahzaib Khanzada on July 18 2019 discussed the video targeting matter of Chairman NAB without taking into account of point of view of NAB.

The Geo news will have to pay fine within 30 days after notification issued by PEMRA and in case of non compliance a strict action will be taken which may result to suspension of licence given to GEO NEWS.

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) said in a statement that Geo News by airing the content of personal life of Chairman NAB violated the Electronic Media Code of Conduct 2015 and orders of the Supreme Court.

Geo News was also previously fined by PEMRA in 2017 by giving remarks on member of parliament Mahmood Khan Achakzai and Maulana Fazlur Rehman in its programme “Jirga” dated February 12 and Geo News License was suspended for 15 days in 2014 with 10 Million Rupees fine on a complaint filed by defence minister however the decision was disowned by PEMRA Spokes person.
