The stampede happened Sunday on a bridge over the Sindh River in Ratangarh, where journeyers were channelized to a temple for a Hindu fete.
A hearsay that the bridge was about to break caused panicky people to stampede, police told to media reporters. About 25,000 people were on the bridge at the time, a local deputy police inspector D.K. Arya, said.
Many people jumped off the bridge into the river, Arya said.
Ratangarh is in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.
