PESHAWAR / SOUTH WAZIRISTAN / QUETTA:
Security forces achieved a significant milestone on Wednesday by neutralizing 13 terrorists in an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in South Waziristan’s Sararogha area. This decisive action targeted militants actively involved in attacks on civilians and armed forces, reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to eradicating terrorism.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) stated that the operation was based on precise intelligence about militant activity. The area is now undergoing a sanitization operation to ensure no militant elements remain.
Makin Incident: A Prelude to the Operation
The IBO followed a tragic attack in South Waziristan’s Makin area on December 20–21, where 16 security personnel were martyred during an intense firefight. The security forces, however, successfully repelled the assault, killing eight militants in the process.
In the aftermath of the attack, security forces launched a clearance operation in Makin, prompting the temporary relocation of 50 families from Dashka and Aba Khel villages. Authorities emphasized that this evacuation was crucial for civilian safety, but affected residents raised concerns about property damage and disruptions to their livelihoods.
Saeed Anwar, a prominent leader of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam Pakistan, criticized the repeated displacements in the region, highlighting extensive damage to homes, mosques, and schools during previous operations. He called for a more strategic approach to counter-terrorism efforts.
Displacement Challenges: A History of Repeated Struggles
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has not yet established temporary camps for displaced families, leaving many without immediate assistance. This has added to the anxieties of those forced to leave their homes.
South Waziristan’s Makin area has witnessed significant operations in the past, notably the 2009 offensive, which displaced thousands of residents. The process of returning these displaced people was only completed in 2018, showcasing the long-term impact such operations can have on local communities.
PM Shehbaz Sharif Commends Security Forces
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the bravery and dedication of the security forces involved in the successful operation.
“The nation is proud of its soldiers, who continue to safeguard Pakistan from terrorism. We will fight against Fitna Al Khawarij and ensure the complete eradication of terrorism from our soil,” he stated.
The prime minister also emphasized the government’s unwavering resolve to thwart the nefarious designs of enemies, ensuring peace and prosperity for all Pakistanis.
Kech IED Blast Claims Two FC Soldiers
In a separate tragic incident in Balochistan’s Kech district, two Frontier Corps (FC) soldiers were martyred, and four others injured in an improvised explosive device (IED) attack. The soldiers were part of an advance security team clearing the route for members of the Qatari royal family, who were visiting for a houbara bustard hunting expedition.
The martyred soldiers were identified as Lance Naik Zaman and Lance Naik Umar Zahoor, while the injured included Naik Naeem, Sepoy Javed, Sepoy Amin, and Sepoy Waheed.
This was the second attack targeting FC personnel in the area within a week. Last week, an ambush in Kolowa injured one FC soldier as they escorted another Qatari delegation.
Security Measures Intensified
The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for the attack. Security forces immediately launched a search operation to locate and apprehend the culprits. Additional troops were deployed to reinforce the safety of the Qatari visitors, who were unharmed during the incident.
A Unified Stand Against Terrorism
The recent operations in South Waziristan and Balochistan highlight Pakistan’s ongoing battle against militancy. The sacrifices of security forces serve as a stark reminder of the nation’s resolve to combat terrorism.
The government and military remain committed to eliminating terrorist threats, ensuring peace, and supporting affected communities. The martyrs’ sacrifices and the bravery of Pakistan’s armed forces symbolize the country’s determination to uphold security and stability for its citizens.
