PESHAWAR (October 14, 2012): Investigations have been kicked off against six security personnel in the wake of recovery of a satellite phone from Dr. Shakil Afridi, being detained in Central Prison Peshawar
According to sources, Dr. Shakil Afridi used the satellite phone to give interviews to a foreign newspaper and to make a number of calls within and outside Pakistan.
A security man has also bee taken into custody for allegedly delivering the phone to Dr. Afridi, sources told Geo News.
On the other hand, Deputy Superintendent Prison Maqsood-ur-Rehman told Geo News that Dr. Afridi’s lawyer or brother who had come to see him a while ago might have smuggled the phone into the prison and given it to him.
Investigations are now being carried out against six security officials who were deployed for Dr. Afridi’s security.
According to the Deputy Superintendent, neither any official was taken into custody nor suspended.
Commandoes appointed in his cell have been suspended after a mobile phone was recovered from Shakil Afridi in Peshawar jail.
A cell phone was recovered from the custody of Shakil Afridi who was imprisoned in a Peshawar jail for launching a fake campaign for CIA to recognize former al-Qaeda number one Osama bin Laden, a private TV channel reported Saturday.
The report quoting jail sources said that that Afridi made 48 calls insdie and outside the country.
It is pertinent to mention here that Shakil Afridi was imprisoned in Central Jail Peshawar in a treason case.
Meanwhile, Afridi revealed that he had gotten the cell phone through police commandos deployed in the central jail.
The report quoting sources said that jail administration suspended all the commandos deployed in the jail.
